Jimmy Boy Arena Passes away

On: September 28, 2005
Jimmy Boy Arena lost his fight with cancer today. He was only 6 years old. Below is a letter from his mom. As information become available it will be posted here.

My Dear Family and Friends,

This update is by far the hardest I will ever write in my life.  Tonight at about 6:30 pm with Jim and I our dear Jimboy passed away to be with God.  There are no words to describe anything.

We were with him and I was holding him when he passed.  He was calm and peaceful.  It was very hard to let go, but I know God was waiting with open and loving arms.

The next few days will be difficult, but we know the incredible amount of love and support we will receive in the coming days.

I will hold this beautiful wonderful amazing child in my heart forever.  Whenever I look at the world around me I will be thankful for each moment.  As I said goodbye tonight, the words to my son of six were "Thank You, thank you for teaching me how to live a better life.  Thank you for guiding me."  I will always be thankful to this amazing little spirit.  I thank God for letting me borrow the most incredible person I will ever know.  He has taught me everything I needed to know about really and truly living life.

So, Thank You Dear Sweet Jimmy boy for every bit of life you gave to me and all of us.

I love you all, kiss your kids, call that person you have been meaning to call, live your life for every moment, and know that sharing your story will help someone else - even if it is just one.

Much love and God Bless You Each and Every One, Gina and Family

About 330 firefighters from Ossining and surrounding areas came out to honor Donald (Donnie) J. Farrell last night, who retired as Ossining's Fire Chief on January 1. Chief Farrell, whose motto is "It's all about having fun," spent the last two years as Ossining's fire chief, and the previous four years as an assistant chief.
Chief Farrell, who received admiration for his work as fire chief, will now become a deputy chief in Ossining, and will fill in for the current chiefs when needed.
"Donnie," as most people call him, will continue to work his day job with the Village of Ossining Police. In 2004, Donnie was promoted to the position of detective, after years of hard work

and dedication, and because he was instrumental in breaking up a Sing Sing breakout plot, which led to the arrest of seven individuals.

In a testament to the respect Donnie receives in Ossining, each Village and Town of Ossining Board member attended the testimonial dinner, which was hosted at Colonial Terrace in Cortlandt Manor. This was the first time in years that all of the Board members were in attendance.

Town of Ossining Supervisor John Chervokas was a guest speaker and said Donnie was always concerned with the safety of Ossining residents and that his tenure was filled with accomplishments. "His six years were highlighted by more achievements than most US Senators in their six years," said Supervisor Chervokas.

For the last two years, Donnie and the Ossining Fire Department have had their hands full with an unprecedented 23 working building fires, including the fire that wiped out storefronts on South Highland Avenue across from the High School.

Supervisor Chervokas was also referring to Donnie's work to bring a faster fire department response to homes in the Town of Ossining with his plans to build a new firehouse on Hawkes Avenue, a project that might be completed this year.

The Village of Ossining's new Mayor Eugene Napolitano was also a guest speaker. Mayor Napolitano reminded everyone that Donnie had held all positions while at Cataract Hose (Engine 97) since joining in 1979. Mayor Napolitano said Donnie was also active in fire organizations at the County and State level and remarked that Donnie is "an asset to the department and the community."

Fire Chief's from surrounding areas also came out to honor Donnie, including chiefs from Croton, Briarcliff Manor, Verplank, Bedford Hills, Port Chester, and Peekskill. Chiefs from as far away as Goshen and Lake George also came to honor the chief.

Firefighter Mauro Santucci replaced Donnie as fire chief at the January 1st ceremony at Cataract Hose on Waller Avenue. At last night's ceremony, Chief Santucci had only good things to say about Donnie and his wife Shelly for their sacrifices over the last six years. "I can't tell you how much we appreciate Donnie," he said to the audience. "And Shelly, you were right there with him."

Shelly had been commended by other speakers as well, for her support of Donnie throughout the years. As fire chief, Donnie had to spend a lot of time away from his family to attend to fire business.

When it was Donnie's turn to stand up, he immediately thanked everyone for their support, including the Board

members, his fellow firefighters, the chiefs and deputy chiefs, the officers of the companies, the ladies auxiliary, the fire dispatchers, and his dad, James, who is also an Ossining firefighter. About his father, who was the MC last night, Donnie said, "If I do half the things right he does, then I did a good job."

Donnie also thanked his children. He said of his oldest daughter, Amanda, who is 17, "You have been the number one babysitter for the last six years," and joked that her "prices have been reasonable."

Donnie also mentioned that his daughter Mackenzie, 9, "has been a blessing" and apologized to his son Dan that he won't have a car that he could play with that had the lights anymore, but then said, "(Dan) has been an inspiration to me."

Donnie also thanked Shelly for her help. "This wouldn't have been possible without your support," he said. "She's been there for me everyday," he said before mentioning to the audience, "I wish each of you could have a Shelly Farrell in your life."

Donnie can now relax a bit and have some fun now that his term is over as Ossining's fire chief.

And it's all about having fun.

Ossining Fire Chief Mauro Santucci had great things to say about Chief Farrell.
